Richard and Judy Book Club Pick 2019 and aSunday Times Number One Bestseller.
Full of her trademark mix of unforgettable characters and heart-breaking secrets, The Butterfly Room is a spellbinding, multi-generational story from Sunday Times bestseller Lucinda Riley.
Posy Montague is approaching her seventieth birthday. Still living in her beautiful family home, Admiral House, set in the glorious Suffolk countryside where she spent her own idyllic childhood catching butterflies with her beloved father, and raised her own children, Posy knows she must make an agonizing decision. Despite the memories the house holds, and the exquisite garden she has spent twenty-five years creating, the house is crumbling around her, and Posy knows the time has come to sell it.
Then a face appears from the past – Freddie, her first love, who abandoned her and left her heartbroken fifty years ago. Already struggling to cope with her son Sam’s inept business dealings, and the sudden reappearance of her younger son after ten years in Australia, Posy is reluctant to trust in Freddie’s renewed affection. And unbeknown to Posy, Freddie – and Admiral House – have a devastating secret to reveal . . .

Biografía del autor
Lucinda Riley was born in 1965 in Ireland, and after an early career as an actress in film, theatre and television, wrote her first book aged twenty-four. Her books have been translated into thirty-seven languages and continue to strike an emotional chord with all cultures around the world. The Seven Sisters series specifically has become a global phenomenon, creating its own genre, and there are plans to create a seven-season TV series.
Her books have been nominated for numerous awards, including the Italian Bancarella prize, The Lovely Books award in Germany, and the Romantic Novel of the Year award. In 2020 she received the Dutch Platinum award for sales over 300,000 copies for a single novel in one year – an award last won by J K Rowling for Harry Potter.
In collaboration with her son Harry Whittaker, she also devised a series of books for children called the Guardian Angels series, based on stories told to her children whenever they were facing a challenging situation. Harry then wrote the books, and they are now being published internationally.
Though she brought up her four children mostly in Norfolk in England, in 2015 she fulfilled her dream of buying a remote farmhouse in West Cork, Ireland, which she always felt was her spiritual home, and indeed this was where her last five books were written.
Lucinda was diagnosed with cancer in 2017 and died on June 11th 2021, surrounded by her family.

This is a 400 page family saga book set over two timelines. There are some secrets, heartache and lies together with some genuinely warm and loveable characters, like Posy, Freddie, Nick and Sebastian. Apart from that, I did feel this wasn’t written by Lucinda Riley; it just didn’t have her ‘Feel’ about it at all.
There are far too many ‘darling girl/boy” sayings which became very tedious indeed and, because of this, I had to keep reminding myself that it was mostly set in the present day and not 1940’s England.
One family secret is a slight shock, especially for the character, but I did limp, feeling rather disappointed, towards the end.
A nice, easy read.

I found the language of the Butterfly Room annoying, too many ‘my dear’ and ‘darlings’, I don’t know anyone who speaks like that nowdays...because of this I found the principle characters one dimensional, all the talking out loud to themselves was rather awful, the plot was thin to say the least and frankly dull..

I really admire the way she weaves the story, making it multi layered and interesting.
Posy is the kind of woman that readers will fall in love with...she’s tenacious, intelligent and passionate, with enough common sense and love to make her an enduring character throughout the book.
I can’t recommend this book and all of her other books enough.
‘Hothouse Flower’remains one of my favourite books of all time and the ‘Seven Sisters’ series is so amazing I find myself longing for the next instalment to come out almost as soon as I finish reading the current book in the series.
