Biografía del autor

Born in Boston in 1919, Richard Scarry’s drawing talent led him to study at the Boston Museum School. He began his career in New York City as an illustrator and freelance artist, and in 1963 he published his first book, The Best Word Book Ever, which became an international best-seller.

I bought this book for my then 2 year old son way back in 2015. I didn't leave a review at the time but I feel compelled to now because I spent a good hour of quality time this morning looking through it with my now 7 year old and it's only now that I realise it's importance and value.

There isn't much of a story to this book, and what story there is won't win any literary prizes, but on reflection I realise now that this is probably one of our most picked up books. We've spent literally hours over the course of the last 5 years just looking at the pages together, talking about the things that are going on, what the vehicles look like, who is driving them, what they might be used for etc etc and as my son has aged the things we see on each page has changed and so has our conversation about it—at 2 years old we read the story and talked about the silly cars but today I noticed the conversation has moved more towards why? and how? and my son being able to read the passages of text himself. Most of the books he had at 2 he has long since outgrown but not this one. I class this as one of those books we will keep as a memento of my sons early years, the one we spent hours flipping through the pages of peacefully connecting with each other.

If you're considering buying it, I would urge you to give it a go. When you get it, don't be put off by the Americanisms, and slightly out of date context. just look through it together, and let the conversation unfold. I promise you will still be doing the same several years later.

When I was a kid, Richard Scarry's books were always some of my favourites, and I can remember this one in particular. Sadly, I lost mine somewhere along the way, but I've now bought it for my own kid (2.5 years old) and he absolutely loves it. He finds the wonderful illustrations highly engaging, and also loves hunting for Goldbug.

Highly recommended.

My son loved this book so much we kept reading it every day for a year from between the years of 3 to 4 years old. He used to ask me to read it together with him before bed otherwise he wouldn't sleep. He would take it on holiday with him too. It's so tattered and covered in sellotape now. Now he is 6 he doesn't read it any more but he still pulls it out for a flick every now and again. If you boy loves cars, this is a wonderfully creative book for him.
