I like to spread the word when I come across a book that excites me. I read Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor last weekend (sequel to Daughter of Smoke and Bone) and I'm all fired up about it. Thank you, Ms. Taylor, for a thrilling couple of days. I am in your debt. (Warning readers: this is one of those series that will have you tearing at your hair and gnashing your teeth waiting for the next installment. Be prepared.) Stephenie Meyer The second instalment is much darker, with more epic battles, suffering and loss ... The ending is absolutely incredible - with a twist that completely catches you by surprise, leaving you dying to find out what happens next. Glamour.com Plunges us into a world of beauty and horror ... intricately plotted ... it's a book that flies between worlds on blood-tipped wings and grips like a magical vice. Daily Mail

Nota de la solapa
It began with the breathtaking DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE... This November, the story continues in the astounding, must-read sequel, DAYS OF BLOOD AND STARLIGHT
Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love and dared to imagine a new way of living - one without massacres and torn throats and bonfires of the fallen, without revenants or bastard armies or children ripped from their mothers' arms to take their turn in the killing and dying.
Once, the lovers lay entwined in the moon's secret temple and dreamed of a world that was a like a jewel-box without a jewel - a paradise waiting for them to find it and fill it with their happiness.
This was not that world. --Este texto se refiere a la edición kindle_edition .

Unfortunately, this book suffered a bit from middle book syndrome. In the beginning of this book Karou’s situation was a bit dire but I was really frustrated with her. I just felt like now that she had all her memories it should be easier for her to realize the intentions and machinations of those around her. It just took her a while to get out of her funk. I felt like only when Zuzana and Mik showed up did the book become interesting and even then, not much happened until the end. I still enjoyed it though, it was a very quick read.

Tan bueno como el primero. Mantiene el ritmo y el suspense, ya estoy leyendo el tercero, Este último lo he tenido que comprar con tapa dura porque creo que en Amazon tienen mal puesta la fecha de publicación en tapa blanda.

Captivating, but very much a middle novel
Revisado en Reino Unido el 9 de diciembre de 2017Compra verificada
This is a really hard novel for me to review because I did really enjoy it but can't deny the fact that it has a lot of problems. The book is very much a middle novel. It does not stand-alone and very little actually happens in it. While the story flits between Karou, Akiva and a handful of other characters, it is merely and extended build-up for the final instalment. There is no real plot, just an escalation of events, and I felt that you could have probably trimmed out at least 100 pages without losing anything.
However, despite the lack of action, I never got bored. The setting of this story is still breathtaking. Laini Taylor is a beautiful writer and this time the story spent a lot more time on Eretz, allowing the reader to learn more about the Seraph way of life. Its tone also slowly intensifies as the story progresses. While bleaker than the previous instalment in many ways, hope gradually builds as Karou learns exactly what Brimstone has planned for her. The story also contains some nice small moments between characters, developing character relationships through conversation and shared experiences.
Yet the ending of the story frustrated me. There was no big climax. The final few chapters just seemed to be very rushed, hastily manoeuvring characters to where they need to be for the next act. A lot of things occur off-page in this time, which felt a little weak. I'm not going to spoil it for you here, but I really wish that there had been more showing and less telling. The novel ended with the words "to be continued" which was also a bit of a kick in the teeth, leaving the story feeling incomplete.
Yet the characters are all stunning. This is where Taylor truly excels as a writer, building a large cast of well-rounded and believable characters. Karou has changed a lot since recovering Madrigal's memories but is still a wholly likeable protagonist. I really felt for her as she was torn between her sense of duty to the Chimera and hatred of Thiago's actions.
However, if you're looking for romance, this book is not for you. Karou's relationship with Akiva is, understandably, strained and the two of them spend very little of the novel together. Akiva's plot arc, while interesting, does not feel as strong as Karou's. A lot of his development occurs off-page, which was a little disappointing. However, the ending of the novel leaves me hopeful that he will have more to do in the sequel.
All in all, I did enjoy this book but didn't think it was anywhere near as strong as Daughter of Smoke and Bone. However, I am optimistic that the climax will be spectacular. I look forward to finding out in a future review.

Filler novel....
Revisado en Reino Unido el 26 de julio de 2016Compra verificada
I loved "Daughter of Smoke and Bone" and was really excited to read this second instalment, alas, as with most trilogy novels these days the first book is excellent and the second book is a "filler" for the third book. The good news is that the third book ( although woefully under edited IMO) is actually a return to form. So, in short, IF you loved the first book and wonder if it will be worth reading the trilogy I would go for it but do so in the knowledge that this book is a little sluggish to get through, however a few key plot points are included to move the story along.

I really enjoyed this book. Thankfully It doesn't suffer from middle book syndrome.(IMO)
Following on from the hauntingly beautiful Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Taylors signature poetic writing continues. She has a way with words that is just magical.
We learn more about the rich, fascinating, but very bloody history of Eretz and are given further development of the main characters as well as introduced to some new ones. The beauty of the Chimaera is in their diversity and Taylor gives us a lot of that. She is very clever in focusing on a few main characters in her first books, expanding the cast in the second so you aren't inundated at the beginning.
I really like that she included some uplifting and humorous parts from Mik and Zuzana as the rest of the storylines are quite intense and it was great to have some comedic relief.
There is some heart break (Ms Taylor we may need to have words if you continue breaking my heart!) and as usual there is more twists and suspense.
Only negative was I was a little confused at the start...I was worried i'd missed a few pages somewhere from the end of the first book and the start of this one. But it all got explained and put into place.
Cannot wait to read the sequel but also find myself trying to delay reading it so that the series isn't over.

Fantastic Trilogy

It is not often that I am determined to write a review about books, however, after finishing this trilogy I had too.
I miss the characters dearly. The story line is truly an epic journey. I felt love and I laughed, I cried, I got angry, and surprised and wishiful and hopeful and...well, what a lovely emotional rollercoaster, just what I love in a book. The lovely way everything - including all the characters, heroes and otherwise - is described made me feel like I was right there in the middle of the action, made me want to be part of it all. Thank you to Laini Taylor for writing these wonderful books. Can't wait to read her other books.

Wish I hadn't read it....
Revisado en Reino Unido el 25 de septiembre de 2017Compra verificada
After I read the first book I wasnt sure whether to continue with this one or not - but the end was strong and the scope for storylines was intense. However, I wish I hadnt bought it to be honest as this book is just unbearably slow to begin with and feels very 'bitty' flitting back and forth a little too much to get the feel for the storylines. I am stubborn so I stuck it out but at times the thought of having to read it made me wince! Then all of a sudden in the last 100ish pages it evolved and grabbed my attention, making it hard to put down. So, for the first and middle sections I give it 0 stars but for the end I give it 4 - so I feel 2 stars is fair for the book. The ending makes me want to look forward to the next installment but I think I will save myself the pain of being bored stiff for more than half the book again. I wanted to like this book, there was so much potential but it took me more than 2 weeks to force myself to read it when my average is 2-3 days. This author just isn't for me.
