Para aquellos que nos quedamos con ganas de saber más tras leer la segunda parte de la triología "The Key to Rebeca" añade otra fase complementaria de los trasijos durante la II Guerra Mundial en escenarios de intriga apartados de los principales del conflicto. Muy bien llevada como es costumbre del autor aunque con algo menos de calidad y fiabilidad histórica que las anteriores (¿más novelesca?). Muy entretenida y recomendable, sin duda dejará satisfechos a los seguidores de Ken Follet..

Desde el primer momento la historia te atrapa, los personajes complejos y bien diseñados. Me gusta la psicología que tiene Ken Follet para hacerte entrar en las profundidades del alma humana.
El entorno del espionaje en El Cairo, la mezcla de culturas: británica, alemana, árabe...la técnica del espía...
Las intrínculis propias del espionaje y contraespionaje....
He pasado un buen rato y creo que he aprendido un poquito más de historia, sabiendo que ésta es como un puzzle, construido a partir de diversas posiciones y opiniones, contradictorias en general.

Reading the other reviewers' comments it seems to me that there are two schools of Ken Follett books: on the one hand there are the heavier historical trilogies, which I must confess I haven't [yet] tried, and on the other there are the lighter fast-paced thrillers; and "The Key to Rebecca" falls very much into the latter category mixing fact and fiction against the backdrop of the Allies' defence of Egypt from Rommel and his Afrika Korps in a tale of deception, lust, loyalty and love.

And that's the point, this is a fast-paced thriller. So what if the story is a bit light-weight, a bit unrealistic and dependent on a convenient contrived device to kick-start the tale [no spoilers here]; so what if the principle characters are a bit stereotyped, especially the senior British officers in General Headquarters, Cairo, but then who hasn't known a boss like Colonel Bogge who shows more interest in organising fielding practice for the military intelligence cricket team than catching spies [apologies if that's a bit of a spoiler]; and so what if there's quite a lot of sex, but then that's true of many of Follett's books. But these are what make this a fast-paced thriller as spy Alex Wolff and spy-catcher Major Vandam race around Cairo and through Egypt in a very personal game of cat and mouse. There is though little intrigue, there are no real twists and turns, this is just a chase, a race against time, between two professionals "with previous" and that's why it's four stars and not five.

Read only if you enjoyed "Night Over Water" or "Jackdaws", perhaps not if you're looking for another "Pillars of the Earth".

One of his better efforts but that’s not saying much. A bit Formulaic and cliched, it started off entertaining enough but was a bit boring by the end. The characters were cliched too, as well as plastic and unbelievable. A big problem was that the story hinges on the spy giving himself away at the beginning by killing a soldier. He killed him because the soldier, having escorted him to his hotel, not only insisted on carrying his case to his hotel but insisted on unpacking the case for him, although told not to. He saw the case was full of money so the spy killed him. Sorry, but that is the silliest, least believable set up in history, and set the tone for the whole book. Disappointing.

This is a gripping story from beginning to end. The Desert War was a close-run thing, the brilliant Rommel won time after time until Monty stopped him at El Alamein, and this book takes you to the heat, smells and dirt of war-time Cairo with an exciting baddie v goodie tale with a bit of romance thrown in for good measure. Unputdownable. Recommended.

The basic scenario - efficient German spy in British-controlled Egypt as the campaign in the Western Desert heads lowards its climax in the late summer/autumn of 1942 - is promising enough, and the tension is maintained gage by page through constant twists and turns of fortune for the spy and his pursuers; but local colour - which could have been rich - was not much in evidence. Apart from one or two brief desert scenes (and one on a train) and occasional references to donkeys, the action could have taken place almost anywhere, rather than in Egypt. Moreover, it is too obviously a tale of goodies and baddies. The spy and his associates are not merely on the 'wrong' (German/Nazi) side - they are personally morally repulsive. It is thus obvious that in the denouement there will be no ambiguous twist, and this reduces the overall drama. Moreover, the intelligence alleged to be fed to Rommel is not tied in closely to his and his opponents' actual actions in the field, so the historical underpinning is not secure. A pity because one feels that Ken Follett could have made a better job of it, judging his undoubted talents from the evidence of his other novels

I enjoyed this book very much. Ken Follett is a master storyteller. It is the story of a ruthless German spy being pursued by a British Intelligence officer all over Egypt in the run up to the battle of El Alamein. The action is fast paced and the resourceful spy is not an easy man to catch. However after many close encounters Major Vandam finally gets his man and the girl as well! It's a cracking story and well up to Mr Follett's high standard. Highly recommended.
