I read this book years ago, but I enjoyed it even more the second time around. Fantastic to read that this small group of very different women from England could be such an important factor for the success of the D Day in world War II.

Follett has always written fast moving stories with plenty of twists and turns, this book is no exception. I don't know if the research is good or not because there are some atrocities that happen during wars that not many people want to know about.
I am old enough to have been brought up by survivors of WW11 and understand the need for younger people to know about fascism and Nazis.
I can never condemn a book showing women to be at their strongest, nowadays i think that most young women are heroes to live in the present time. This book is worth four stars to me as I am not very good at reading about violence.

All in all this was a very enjoyable read. As ever with Ken Follett's books I was rewarded with a very well written, perfectly paced peice of work. The characters were all written well into the story and also very believable, but at the same time very interesting and charismatic. As for the plot, well I found it very good, however somewhat predictable in parts. I would have given this book five stars, however, there was one part of the story that was for me a little to ridiculous when some of the team went to a certain hotel in Paris. I won't elaborate on this as it may spoil the story for anyone else who does go on and reads this story. I hope they do go on and read this, because if they do they're in for a good few hours of entertainment.

Usual racey and racing Ken Follet adventure. In part based on a real event of WW2. Quite a plausible story with excellent character development. If you have no idea how awful some means of torture can be, you will be in no doubt after reading this. The outcome for the heros and villains is always in doubt until after the last line of the book. A real page turner until you’re past the last page of the main book. Well worth the money.

I really did enjoy this book except that I didn't really feel part of, or picture myself in the places described. I am not sure why this happens but when I read a book I like to feel that I can see the action being described. Towards the end of this tale Follett describes a French village scene at noon, the streets were deserted because the French are at lunch. If you have ever driven through a village or town in France at noon you will know what He means. It was then that I realised it was these little details that left me feeling slightly outside the book instead of fully immersed. Ah well c'est la vie as they say, I will still read it again in a year or two. After all it is, as I said, a gripping story.

Ken Follett writes excellent escapist fiction and Jackdaws is no exception. Brave secret agents, in this story predominantly female, undertake a mission in occupied France. It coincides with British D Day plans, so the timeline made it interesting to read this month. The characters are typically gung-ho, from a range of backgrounds, upper class to convicted criminals, thrown together by the vagaries of a wartime mission.
Ken Follett's books create a time and place and draw the reader in to the events. There's the Chateau, which doubles as local Gestapo HQ, the SS General, reporting to Rommel, who despises the Gestapo, the French Resistance Leader and team, a Major leading a female team to destroy a key target and various officials from British and American Government. These characters are a great mix for a fast paced story where a small team works against the clock and every adversity possible to achieve a mission success. I was immersed over a couple of days and it kept my attention from start to finish, so a light but rewarding read.
