This is the fourth in Baldacci's series featuring Army detective John Puller I have had mixed feelings for this particular character because of his similarity both in background and appearance to John Reacher the long established character created by Lee Child. Despite these initial misgivings I have read and enjoyed each book including this one.

Puller is visiting his father, who is in the advanced stages of dementia, in hospital when he is advised that allegations have been made against his father. The allegation is that Puller Snr murdered his wife some thirty years previously. Puller Jnr had believed his mother had just walked out on them.

Puller is determined to establish the truth even if it means convicting his own father. However he finds that there are few people willing to talk of the events of that period. Suddenly he is ordered out of the country and the official investigation is closed down. Puller realises that this is much more than just a murder it is a cover-up of monumental proportions. He needs all the friends he can if he is to continue his investigation. Who is the violent man with super strength?

In a book that is extremely fast-paced Baldacci creates a narrative that is frightening in its simplicity. He highlights how the stated claim of the needs of the many can be hijacked to ensure the benefits and ideals of the few.

Well worth a look.

Yet another great David Baldacci novel. This one is about John Puller an Army man. He is told that his father had been accused of killing his wife over 30 years before. John Puller senior is in the final stages of altzimers
And in a home waiting to die. His wife disappeared when John junior was a little boy.
With the help of Veronica Knox and his brother Robert, John tries to track down what happened to his mother. He uncovers murders and military cover ups. He is ordered to drop the search. He will not.
Yet again a book worthy of a film. Well done. Great book.

Both my wife and I are big fans of David Baldacci and we both agree that this is one of the best, if not the best novel he has written. I cannot believe that at least one of your reviews thought it boring and ended up yawning. It is a very good story and well worth reading. I look forward to his next book.

I really quite enjoyed the first couple of books in the John Puller series, was prepared to accept the third novel about his brother but this book now switches to his father & mother.
Given the investigations he could be involved in, I would think the author could avoid raking over the various Puller family members in successive books.
The actual super-soldier main plot is just too unlikely, and having Puller operating without official support again just further rings him closer to the Jack Reacher category.

This book is exactly what I would expect from a David Baldacci novel, especially the John Puller series. It is full if intricate plot threads which twist and turn and you really have to concentrate to keep up. The characters are so real and, having read the previous three novels in this series, I was so pleased to be presented with a fourth. There is plenty of excitement and suspense and a great deal of thrills and spills with plenty of villains being shot and most of the good guys surviving. Very hard to put down and I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good gripping read.
