The book hooks you in from the first page and is a good Summer read. The plot keeps your attention and there is a great description of the characters. Nevertheless, the book is full of needless quite explicit sex scenes where men and women easily get involved. They seemed to be there just to fill pages or follow the fashion of 50 shades...

Good book
Revisado en Reino Unido el 1 de octubre de 2017Compra verificada
Ken Follett never fails to entertain me with his books, this one is not different , I loved the setting ,and characters as usual are all very well crafted.
Some sex scenes very graphic make this book for adult only readers that I think is a shame as the story could have been enjoyed by a younger range of readers as well.
Overall a good book , 4 stars instead of 5 because the end was a bit rushed and lacked a bit of a kick to make memorable on my opinion.

Pre-war standards tested by 24 hours of thrills & drama in a flying boat on the eve of war...
Revisado en Reino Unido el 16 de septiembre de 2018Compra verificada
These days we take most things for granted, including air travel, but I suppose once a upon a time trans-Atlantic flights would have been adventurous and romantic especially if you happened to be flying super first class in a massive half boat/half plane with your every need attended (think Concorde times 100 and then think again). And it's against this backdrop of romantic airborne adventure that Ken Follett unfolds a heady mix of thrills and drama that stretch and test the pre-war morals and behaviours that were to be wiped away for good in the days that followed.
So this was my type of book and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. Ok perhaps the denouement was a little too obvious, and maybe in some ways it all feels a little too Murder on the Orient Expressy, but the Pan Am Clipper setting is great; the characters are a fascinating mix, the sort you only ever find between the pages of a novel; and the storyline is attention holding even if it lacks twists and turns. But all in all I thought it was great (and yes, as other reviewers have pointed out, there is a lot of sex).

Fancy crossing the Atlantic by half boat , half plane
Revisado en Reino Unido el 28 de agosto de 2018Compra verificada
Fantastic, discriptive account of the flying ship short era of life. Braver people than me flew them and yet it opened up the Atlantic crossing for planes crossing in just over a day, something akin to man thinking they could go to the moon at the start of the 20 th century. The characters on the whole were not that plausible, maybe leaving on the day the war started was a saving grace. But as regards flying and landing the plane at its various stops, all the research that went into it , how the top class meals were cooked and served and even making the bunks, brought out the best in it

Oh Boy!!!

This was an absolute cracker. I have only read one other Ken Follet book which I thoroughly enjoyed but this had me totally enthralled. I loved the characters and the last few chapters had me riveted to my chair. Could not put it down. Went back on Amazon and ordered several more of KF's books for my Kindle. Highly recomended

Very Disappointing
Revisado en Reino Unido el 31 de diciembre de 2013Compra verificada
The worst Follett book of the 4 I've read so far. (I've enjoyed the others). To sum it up in the most simplistic form, the characters were unpleasant, the plot was weak, the chief villain was a total wimp, and it was obvious from early on, who, on the plane, the bad guys were really after. Even the obligatory Follett sex scene(s) were OTT, probably on purpose, to detract from the feeble plot.
The one redeeming feature of this story was the information on the `Clipper' which crossed the Atlantic at the outbreak of WW II. I understand these details were accurate (even if the goings on inside were dubious) and I found it interesting, as I had no previous knowledge of this sea plane. For this reason two stars rather than one.
