"It comes as no surprise to learn that Sansom's novel spent month after month on London's bestseller lists."
-The Philadelphia Inquirer "There are touches of Graham Greene; Hemingway's here, too. . . . But Sansom transfigures his sources into a moral universe very much his own."
-The Independent (U.K.) "Sansom [proves] real noir is best when lit with flashes of wit."
-Publishers Weekly "Sansom can lay claim to a place among the best distinguished of modern historical novelists."

Contraportada
'A remarkable achievement'
Times Literary Supplement
'An unsentimental and utterly fascinating portrait of Spain in 1940 . . . a superb achievement'
Guardian
'A compelling tale of game-playing, memories and the impact of impossible choices. If you like Sebastian Faulks and Carlos Ruiz Zafón, you'll love this'
Daily Express
'Sansom adroitly draws the disparate strands of his ambitious saga together. His non-pareil evocations of time and place anchor his characters with satisfying precision'

At first I found the story hard going but after about 80 pages, the intrigue got me ! I live in Spain so the colourful description of Spain during the civil war era is fascinating. Added to the mix of spies and romance, Winter in Madrid, makes an excellent read.

A very nicely developed story with interesting characters and set ups. It also depicts well the situation in Spain and Madrid during the civil war. I really enjoyed reading this book.

Alter ego inglés de «Un tiempo entre costuras» pero con el trasfondo de una España post-guerra civil menos edulcorado. Muchos golpes de efecto. Muy ilustrativos los comentarios finales.

Me gusta mucho.

Sansom does it again. My only fault would be with the somewhat incongruous ending, but I remember something similar in Dominion so maybe it's something CJ could look into.

Me ha sorprendido favorablemente. El punto de vista inglés del franquismo en la Segunda Guerra Mundial es de lo más interesante. El libro afloja un poco al final, pero aún así está super bien.

I lived through several cold Madrid winters and hot summers, long before we all joined the Common Market!

A friend recommended this book knowing that I had lived and worked in a bank in Madrid in the 1960’s. The Madrid I knew was happy and safe. The only trouble seemed to come from Basque separatists who blew things up from time to time. Most of the people I lived and worked with seemed contented with their lot, from the aristocrats who ran the bank down to the botones newly arrived from the pueblo. People could work their way up. Everybody was friendly and approachable. All my foreign friends, I think, felt the same.
For me, therefore, the book was rather hard to digest at times because it is very graphic; I put it down to the fact that it cannot be easy to make peace immediately after a civil war when people are having to live among their former enemies. The story line is very compelling and you just have to keep on reading to find out what happens. A good read.

A lost opportunity, but still well worth a read.

This has some exciting moments in it but it could have had so much more. Just when you think the author has a great story line he squanders it. The relationship with Harry and Sofia, the prison camp near Cuenca, the denouement in Cuenca could have been described, used, dragged out and really enhanced this book because the story is worthwhile and overall so is the book. I left the book wanting to know more about the Civil War and not rely on Orwell and for that I am grateful to Mr Sansom. There is something profoundly depressing about any Civil War. Cuenca is an interesting and strikingly beautiful town with a big gorge running through it and an old foot bridge. In the backstreets you will find a wonderful modern art museum in an old hanging house. When you have read this book go and check out Cuenca, its cathedral, its several museums and that museum to 20th Century Spanish Art. You won't find any sign of a prison camp.

Having enjoyed the Shardlake series very much I thought I'd give this novel a go, especially as it was on a price discount promotion from Amazon. I'm very glad it was as I disliked this book intensely. For me, the writing was turgid, facile and stilted with a large amounts of script with little substance to relieve the padding. The author appears to have researched the historical background and the characters are almost believable -but only up to a point. I managed to struggle through to the end but quickly became bored with it and was left quite dissatisfied with the denouement. I think I'll stick with Master Matthew's exploits in future!

Historically interesting but too long

I read this book as a choice from my book group so I should say that it was not my first choice! However, the book contained some interesting details about the Spanish Civil War and included some references to some prominent Allies in WWII based in Spain. However, I found that the story dragged on quite a bit - there are approx. 650 pages. In addition, the 'thriller' aspect was not exciting enough for me and the ending was a little bit lackluster.

I've read perhaps most of Sansom's fiction works. The research is meticulous, the period setting / background rich in detail, essential explanations carefully crafted into the narrative. This novel evokes the atmosphere of war time Europe with Spain poised on an uneasy neutrality. The characters are well drawn and entirely credible and the plot draws one in and along...keeping the reader engaged to the very end with twists and turns. It was recommended to me and I recommend it to you!
